Addgene

Addgene is a nonprofit organization where researchers can deposit, request, and learn about plasmids . Plasmids are fragments of double-stranded DNA that typically carry genes and can replicate independently from chromosomal DNA. Once researchers have published a research paper, they can deposit their plasmid to Addgene. This allows other researchers to access the plasmid for their research. Addgene’s open source philosophy is an interesting reflection of science today. It is a non-profit that was founded by Melina Fan, her brother and husband in 2004.

Addgene averages 350 deliveries a day and they have sent nearly 1 million plasmids to more than 80 countries. Most fluorescent protein plasmids are available through Addgene
